Scholarly Readings of Young Historians VI
Turning Points in the History of the Baltic Sea Region: People, Ideas, Events
Valmiera Museum, 27th–28th November 2020
The participants will have the chance to present their research findings in an academic environment and to submit their papers to an anonymously reviewed collection of conference papers ”The Scholarly Readings of Young Historians VI”.
The organisers are looking forward to participation applications from students from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia whose research interests include topics related to the history of the Baltic Sea Region in the broadest possible contexts: archaeology and pre-history; the auxiliary sciences of history; medieval history and Livonia; the history of the Modern period in the Baltic (the 16th-19th century: politics, culture, society, ethnography etc.); the 20th-21st century history of the Baltic States (politics, culture, society, economy etc.); art history etc.
The Scholarly Readings of Young Historians VI will be held on 27th-28th November 2020 and are organised by the Institute of Latvia’s History of the University of Latvia (LU LVI) and Valmiera Museum, in co-operation with Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, the Lithuanian History Institute and the Institute of History and Archaeology of Tartu University. The participation in the Scholarly Readings is open to students of history and other sciences from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
Looking back in time, we can clearly see moments when the existing situation changes considerably and something completely new emerges. When there live and work persons whose activities leave permanent traces in the history of the respective field, town, state or even the world. When new ideas that change the perception and create a new worldview are born and spread. When as a result of long-term or, on the contrary, unexpected events the former course of developments takes a new turn. The Scholarly Readings of Young Historians VI intends to focus on such important moments in the history of the Baltic Sea Region from the pre-historic times to the present day.
Participation in the conference is free of charge. Upon individual arrangement with partner institutions, the organisers will consider covering the accommodation costs in Valmiera for students from Lithuania and Estonia.
Requirements for potential conference participants:
- BA degree;
- Clear formulation of the research object and the relevance of the proposed presentation to the historical processes in the Baltic Sea Region in the application form.
The applications will be evaluated by a scholarly commission compiled by the LU LVI, which reserves the right to reject the application if:
1) the proposed presentation topic does not match the goals and theme of the conference;
2) the application form is received after the stipulated deadline.
The participants are required to apply by 1st November 2020by filling out the Participant Application Form
The applications will be evaluated and the applicants will be notified by 10th November 2020.
