The exhibition is a dedication to the 115th anniversary of the painter Rūdolfs Voldemārs Vītols and a part of the 60th anniversary of the Valmiera Museum.
Artist R.V. Vītols was born on April 9, 1904 in Valmiera district and died on October 25, 1980 in Cleveland.
In 1933 graduated from Art Academy of Latvia, a master-workshop in figural painting of Ģ. Eliass, later upgraded his professional mastery in Paris, and returned to Latvia at the beginning of World War II. In 1944, he emigrated to Germany, living in refugee camps, then moved to the United States, North Carolina, Shelby, where he worked as an artist and art teacher. From 1952, he lived in Ohio, in Rocky River – a suburb of Cleveland. He worked there as an artist, crating original greeting cards.
Throughout his artistic work, R. Vītols has experimented with various materials and techniques. The artist has sought life and art ideals in realistic and symbolic fantasies. From 1966 he participated in exhibitions in the USA.
The painter’s works are located in France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, England, Australia, Argentina, Canada, in the USA and in the artist’s homeland – Latvia, at the Valmiera Museum, which are received as a gift from the artist’s spouse, musician Olga Vītola.
The Valmiera Museum is grateful to the Latvian congregation of Cleveland for the preservation and depositing of R.Vītols’ heritage to the museum.
