The exhibition is based on stories about the events and processes in Valmiera during 100 years since proclamation of Republic of Latvia. As a timeline, which is marked by all presidents of Latvia, this exhibition will serve as a historical point of reference. As leading-motive, telling the history of Valmiera and its development during 100 years since establishment of the Republic. Valmiera as an example of the history of Latvia in a miniature form with all positive and negative aspects.
The word combination Presidental games. 100 years of Valmiera in the Republic of Latvia is a figurative expression, that points to political, diplomatic, ideological, commercial and economical games, in which presidents take part and it impacts every citizen. After the First World War in 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles presidents re-divided the world as playground. The so-called Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939 clearly showed, how powerful presidents played and pencilled in division of countries that did not belong to them. Presidents of each country leave their footmarks and inheritance in their playground.
In individual stories the exhibition shows stories of the Proclamation of Latvia, territorial changes of Valmiera`s, architecture, culture, life of society, as well as ideologically, politically and socially important processes. The main emphasis of the exhibition is placed on the development, growth, progress and problems of the city as a whole.
In all times, charismatic personalities have played a major role. Each of them leaves their own contribution – both locally and nationally. However, this time biographical stories play the smallest role.
Materials from Latvian War museum, museums of Valmiera and Limbaži, Latvian State Historical Archives, the Latvian State Archive of Audiovisual Documents and the Valmiera Regional State Archive of the National Archives of Latvia and private collections are used in this exhibition.
