Aleksejs Naumovs “Never ending landscape” (until 30.03.2019.)

Artist Aleksejs Naumovs was born in 1955 and during forty years of his creative activity artisthas established a convincing handwriting that is recognizedby every person who isactivelyinterested in art. Over the past twenty years evaluating his diverse landscapes covering Latvia and almost all the world, the master is often referred to as the most outstanding contemporary Latvian plenary.

Naumovs says that the whole world is his workshop, since he works in spite of the weather: the sun, rain or wind – his masterpieces are created in the environment. With gratitude he accepts life: a pleasure and a miracle of pure light festivals, it`s sound and energy ispainted on the canvas without the use of sketches, photographs, even drawings.Choosing the right colours, as well as the power, large-scale scope and expression, continues the traditions of landscape genre in painting, developing the style of “a la prima”, consistently creating works of artoutside the workshop, out in the nature. New York, Venice, Burano, Paris, Nice, Oslo, Beijing, Riga –those are just a few of the many artist studios where he caught the feel of joyous journey by painting big, bright squares on canvas, that will later on bring joy and pleasure to its viewer. These canvases reveal the various periods of artists’ work and the most important directions of his work, inviting viewers to follow the qualities that most of art lovers already know well.The immeasurable joy of colour is recognizable in the landscapes of the city of Burano or in the scenery of the French Riviera. It seems that AleksejsNaumovs has completely fulfilled the longs for journey to the South – yearningthat always existed in Latvian art.

About an artist

Aleksejs Naumovs graduated from Janis Rozentals Riga Secondary School of Art, as well as Department of Monumental Painting at the Latvian Academy of Artsunder the guidance of Professor IndulisZarins, and received a postgraduate degree received at the workshop of Professor Edward Kalnins. He was a stipendiary of French government(at Université Paris I Sorbonne – Arts Plastiques, Cinémaet Sciences de l’Art, Paris Nationalesupérieure des beaux-arts de Paris), to study painting in Paris.At present he is Professor at the Latvian Academy of Arts, former Vice Rector, Rector (2007-2017), has been a guest professor at several European art universities. Has actively participated in collaborative art projects in Italy, France, Japan, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Russia, USA, etc. He was the Ambassador of the Culture of Latvia in France. AleksejsNaumovs has formed more than 60 personal exhibitions in Latvia and abroad since 1979 and has participated in several dozens of group exhibitions. The artist has also illustrated several children’s books.Naumov’s contribution was also appreciated by the Republic of Latvia, awarding the Latvian Highest Award in 2012 – Commander of the Cross of Recognition. In 2004, the artist received the medal of the President of the Italian Republic “Ordine al MeritodellaRepublicaItalianaCommendatore”, while in 2016 he was awarded the Chevalier degree of the French Order of Art and Literature (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres).
